Free Derry Corner is an icon representing the Republican Resistance, and marking the eastern border of the Bogside area. The words You are Now Entering Free Derry were crudely painted on the side of a dwelling in 1969 by a local activist. hen a British Home Secretary Jim Callaghan came to visit the city later that year, locals whitewashed the wall and had the words professionally painted — to ensure the British Government’s representative would get the nationalist’s message. The house was destroyed in 1972, but the gable wall was retained, and now stands a monument.
